The Traditional Owner Tour is a unique experience that provides guests with a rare opportunity to connect directly with the local Indigenous culture of the Tiwi people. As part of this intimate experience, one of the Tiwi Traditional Owners joins the group on a buggy trip, guiding them into the lush mangroves that surround the Retreat. This is a chance to walk alongside a custodian of ancient traditions, learning firsthand about the deep knowledge and skills that have been passed down through generations.

The highlight of the tour is the introduction to “bush tucker” — the traditional foods found in the bushland and mangroves of the Tiwi Islands. With the Traditional Owner as your guide, you’ll learn how to identify and hunt for a variety of bush foods. One common find in these mangroves is the mud mussel. As you explore, your guide shares invaluable knowledge about the land, the importance of sustainable practices, and the unique relationship the Tiwi people have with their environment.

After exploring and gathering bush tucker, the experience continues back at the Retreat. Here, guests gather around a crackling bonfire watching the sunset, where the Traditional Owner shares stories from Tiwi culture dating back thousands of years. The tour finishes with a demonstration of traditional food preparation techniques. Guests are invited to watch and learn as the Traditional Owner skilfully prepares the day’s gatherings, using methods that have been perfected over countless generations.
