Whether you’re chasing barramundi in the creeks or targeting pelagics offshore, understanding the fishing seasons can help you make the most of your trip.
A fishing experience like no other
The Build-Up (October to December)
The Build-Up is the lead-in to the Wet Season. Temperatures rise, humidity increases, and storm activity begins to appear on the horizon. This change in conditions sparks movement in the water, and many fish species become more active.
Where to fish: Tidal creeks, mangrove-lined estuaries, and sheltered coastal areas.
Target species: Barramundi, mangrove jack, golden snapper.
What to expect: Fish feeding more aggressively as water temperatures increase.
The Build-Up is known for producing some strong barramundi action, especially for anglers who know where to look.
The Wet Season (January to March)
During the Wet, the Top End receives heavy rainfall. Rivers swell, floodplains expand, and the landscape transforms. While access can sometimes be limited due to weather and road closures, the Wet is a crucial part of the region’s natural cycle.
Fishing conditions: Variable, depending on rainfall and access.
What’s happening: Baitfish spread out across the floodplains, preparing for the runoff.
Angling note: Short weather windows can still offer good fishing in sheltered areas.
Although consistent fishing may be harder to come by, this season lays the foundation for what comes next — the Runoff.
Please note that the retreat is closed from mid-November to the end of March each year during this season.
The Runoff (March to May)
For many anglers, this is the best time of year to chase barramundi – it’s also when the retreat opens back up again! As the floodwaters begin to recede, water drains from the floodplains into rivers, creeks, and coastal systems. This concentrated flow carries baitfish into tight areas, and predators like barramundi follow.
Where to fish: Drains, river mouths, shallow creeks, and estuarine channels.
Target species: Large barramundi, along with threadfin salmon and estuary cod.
Why it’s popular: Fish gather in predictable locations and feed aggressively.
This is often the most productive season for barramundi fishing across the Top End.
The Dry Season (May to September)
The Dry Season brings cooler temperatures, low humidity, and calm seas. This is a great time for offshore and reef fishing, with consistent weather allowing for longer days on the water.
Fishing areas: Bluewater, reef systems, tidal flats.
Target species: Spanish mackerel, queenfish, trevally, coral trout, golden snapper, longtail tuna.
Conditions: Light winds and clear water, perfect for offshore charters and sight fishing.
Barramundi are still present in some systems during the Dry, but most anglers take advantage of the excellent bluewater conditions and diverse offshore species.
